Car Tax Northern Ireland

It was recently reported that the number of vehicles being clamped has risen since the paper car disc was scrapped. It is no longer necessary to display the paper tax disc.

Vehicle excise duty is automatically cancelled when the ownership of a car changes hands. Even if there is vaild tax disc still displayed on the car. You must personally tax your car when you get a new vehicle.

A lot of people are not aware of this obligation directly leading to an increase in clamping in recent times. The DVLA will write to a new owner of a vehicle to inform them that the tax on the vehicle is due.

The new system has been criticised because the DVLA will receive two payments in the overlap for any month in which the car is transferred.

We certainly have seen the clampers in this locality enthusiastically carrying out their jobs. It will cost you £100 to release your vehicle if it has been clamped. The vehicle then must be taxed or a surety of £160 is paid subject to the vehicle being taxed within 2 weeks. You will lose your £160 if the vehicle is not taxed with two weeks. Storage charges are imposed if the vehicle is not released within 24 hours.

There is a new service to check your car tax online Northern Ireland.
