Shackleton

Ernest Shackleton 100 years ago today

100 years ago today, Ernest Shackleton led his men to safety to South Georgia island.

However, the rescue mission was not over. They landed on the wrong side of the island and faced a dangerous climb. He had also left half of his crew behind as he went to get help.

To do nothing would have meant certain death for them all.

The Shackleton story is a real life, epic tale of bravery, leadership and ultimate survival. Shackleton led an expedition to the South Pole. Their ship, the Endurance, got caught and trapped in ice. The expedition to the South Pole was over. The crew were stranded.

The real expedition for survival was to begin!

Shackleton failed to reach the South Pole but was successful in bringing all his men home against all odds. Through the ice, ferocious open ocean, death defying climbs and bleak isolation, he led his men to safety.

It is a classic story and today marks the 100 year anniversary of his arrival at South Georgia, a desolate whaling station in the middle of the ocean.

The book below is a great read if you are interested in adventure in the most extreme parts of our world. There are many lessons to learn from Earnest Shackleton - his leadership, man management and unwavering devotion to his crew.
