At one time most people who lived on the Bridal Loanon dreaded Halloween and the bonfire - environmentally unfriendly, dirty and potentially dangerous.

The last bonfire to happen in the "Plats" was 8 years ago. That night was a particualry bad one with ugly scenes of destruction. The bonfire was a tradition in this spot for many years and it was thought unthinkable to suggest that it should not happen.

We remember the very next night a meeting being held at the Town Hall chaired by Councillor Mickey Ruane were he pledged to do something about Halloween in Warrenpoint to avoid a repeat of the behaviour that went on the evening before.

A successful Halloween Festival was put in place and now the imminent redevelopment of the Ringmacilroy Play area.

We will see a Practice Wall for ball players which will be a welcome addition to the playing surface that already exists there.

Whatever your political views or persuasion is , credit is very much due to Mickey Ruane for fighting Warrenpoint's corner at local government level to secure funding for these projects.
