We just came across this book yesterday.
Mourne Quest is a fantastic story for kids and adults alike. Jack Turner, a young boy living on the coast of Ireland in mid-1800s is distraught when his fisherman father fails to return from sea after a great storm. Believing he has the power to make wishes come true, Jack wishes for his father's safe return. When his wish is not granted, Jack embarks on a journey through the Kingdom of Mourne. On the way he encounters mysterious creatures, both friendly and frightening, visits hidden locations in the Mourne Mountains and discovers his own true powers. In McElherron's debut, he draws upon the local landscape to conjure up a refreshingly imaginative novel. Rather than simply churning out the stock-in-trade stories of Irish mythology, McElherron draws inspiration from the wonderfully evocative place names of the Kingdom of Mourne, requiring the reader to re-think the landscape of Ireland.
